Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls have been called up for duty by soldiers in Afghanistan, who claim that Wigan’s favourite sweets help to keep them all aglow in freezing weather conditions.
Corporal Robert King, a soldier and search dog handler in the British Army, contacted Uncle Joe’s by email asking for some urgent supplies of mint balls. He claimed that the sweets would help him and his comrades survive winter temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees centigrade!
Robert, who is currently deployed on operations in Afghanistan with the Military Working Dog Support Unit, grew up in Pemberton and is therefore a big fan of Uncle Joe’s, so much so that he took his own stash to the Middle East with him.
The sweets proved so popular in the cold climate, that rations were soon running low. Corporal King wrote: “My supply of Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls have all gone, we are no longer ‘Kept All Aglow’. If you can possibly help me and my soldiers in our hour of need, we would be most grateful!”
Uncle Joe’s were quick to respond and have organised for XX bags of their famous mint balls to be sent to the army camp.
Managing Director John Winnard said: “We do receive a lot of emails from people requesting products for good causes and we try to help as many people as we can. When I received Robert’s email I felt proud that a local soldier had such fond memories of our sweets that he’d taken them away with him. I hope the package arrives in time to give him and his soldiers some comfort in the extreme weather conditions that they currently have to endure.”
